In My Bag

Having come back from a wonderful holiday spending time with family I got the chance to speak to my cousin who will become a father for the first time in the not so distant future! His beautiful expectant wife made me aware of how she has avoided packing her hospital bag simply because she had no idea what she would need. She gave me the inspiration for this post as I hope it would help others who are in the same boat as my cousins.

For some the task of packing your hospital bag can be a simple and seemingly smooth process. However, I realised for many others this can be a very daunting task, especially as in the case of my cousins where they are the first amongst their peers to be parents they do not have the luxury of drawing on the past experience of others. Hopefully this post will make that task a lot less daunting when the time comes and your bundle of joy is ready to join your beautiful family.

My rule of thumb when packing your bag is keep it simple, don’t go overboard with what you need to put in your bag. The main reason for this is that during child birth things can get quite chaotic from the trip to hospital to the actual labour itself so the less you pack the less you need to worry about looking after your bag. Remember you can always send your hubby or family members to pick up other items you may need during your hospital stay. After all thats what they are for right considering the traumatic experience that you have to endure during child birth thats the least hubby can do for you. So here is the list of what was in my bag during my hospital stay:

1. PYJAMAS

Peter Alexander PJs and Nightie (Can't get much more comfy then Mr Alexander)

I packed a pair of pyjamas and a long nightie in my bag. The nightie comes in handy for the first day after childbirth as you will have the doctor and nurses checking constantly down there to make sure everything is healing and looking good. Trust me once you give birth you lose all your shyness and reservations about your private parts it will be no holds bar so you just have to suck it up and let the nurses and doctors do their job. Hence, I found the nightie was a better option for easy access because it can be quite annoying having to constantly take your pyjama bottoms off. However, if you are like me who feels more comfy in their trusty pjs you can wear them after your first days in hospital, especially when your milk comes pjs are more easier to breastfeed in. I would also bring along a robe if you are having a baby during winter as it can get quite cold breast feeding in the middle of the night as I was for my first born.

2. SLIPPERS OR THONGS

Next Slippers These are great as you can wear them to go home and they are as comfy as slippers.

Slippers or Thongs are a must as hospital floors are quite cold and you may need to wander around from the nursery to different classes for breastfeeding and bathing baby.

3. TRACKSUIT

Its got to be said trackies are an optional item in your bag. I had a pair in mine because I really didn’t want to see my family and friends in pjs but still wanted to stay comfy and hey what better option than some comfy but also stylish trackies!!!

4. EVERYDAY BEAUTY PRODUCTS

As you can see I am a huge fan of Dermalogica, having introduced my hubby to the Dermalogica moisturiser a few years ago we have never looked back. He loves the fact that the moisturiser feels like you are not wearing any and I love that all their products are made from natural ingredients!! No nasty chemicals or artificial fragrances here!

5. BABY ROMPERS

Pure Baby

I have included my two favourite brands here but honestly there are so many endless possibilities when it comes to rompers and many other brands have wonderful designs and colours so we are indeed spoilt for choice in this area. I love Pure Baby as they use organic materials and hence their rompers are probably one of the softest I’ve seen. However, the down side is they are one of the more expensive brands. Thats why Bonds are the other of my favourite brands. Not only are Bonds affordable but their rompers are one of the few around that have cuffs sewn on to the sleeves of the rompers which are perfect to cover baby hands so no need for mittens that may keep falling off your newborns tiny hands.

When choosing rompers for your newborn look for ones with buttons rather than zippers. Go for rompers with covers on the feet and where possible hands as well. And my personal preference are rompers that are buttoned up down the middle so you can slip baby’s arms in on either side rather than rompers where you have to put it over baby’s head!! Remember newborns are quite fragile and they don’t like you taking long to dress them so the more convenient the romper the better!!

6. BEANIE AND CARDIGAN

As newborns are unable to regulate their body temperature at birth they can get quite cold especially during the evening so hence a cardigan and hat are essential to keep them warm.

7. BABY WRAP

I must stress baby wraps are an optional item as many hospitals do provide this during your stay in hospital. However, I chose to bring my own ones along being a fan of organic products I packed a couple of Aden and Adais muslin wraps. Yes the same one used for Prince George of Cambridge. Aden and Adais wraps are great they provide warmth to your newborn yet are made from light, soft and breathable material so baby is wrapped in the best of comfort!! And its all made from natural materials.

8. MISCELLANEOUS

Finally just a few bits and pieces to round out your bag and you are ready to go when the time comes and the baby is on its way!! You will need a brush, toothbrush, toothpaste, maternity pads (the thicker and longer the better) you will need it!! Finally some breast pads as there will be a few leakages when your milk comes. And that my folks was What Was In My Bag!!

Winter Pregnancy Fashion

Winter fashion during pregnancy is all about the COAT!!! Invest in a well fitted coat and you can turn any simple outfit into an exquisite one! I must admit I spent most of my later months of pregnancy in my burberry wool trench coat! When it comes to stylish coats that are well fitted and classic that bucks all trends and lasts over time you really can’t go past Burberry. Having a decent coat really does save time especially on winter days when you can’t really be bothered, team a pair of jeans and teeshirt with a stylish coat and voila you are ready to do a photoshoot for Vogue or Harpers Bazaar!! Likewise put a stylish coat over a simple maternity dress and you have instant glam! Take inspiration from the Duchess of Cambridge who spent most of her pregnancy in a number of pretty and very stylish coats. Here are some examples of my favourite brands of coats!

The other essential must in any pregnant woman’s wardrobe is definitely a pair of comfy trusted jeans. Even before my pregnancy I practically lived in my jeans they were a staple of my wardrobe and hey why should that change when I got pregnant! So as soon as I couldn’t squeeze myself into my everyday jeans (trust me I hanged on for as long as possible) I knew it was time to invest in a decent pair of maternity jean! I wouldn’t go crazy and buy heaps just a couple to get you through your pregnancy is fine as you can’t really re-wear these after pregnancy. Luckily for me my favourite brand of jeans J Brand have a wonderful selection of maternity jeans as well that are just as comfy as the originals ones!! Trust me you wont be disappointed they have great durability as well!! The other brand I love and highly rate is the Paige jeans and like J Brand they also carry a number of maternity jeans and the fit of these jeans are just superb!

Lastly the only other items during winter you would need, to look like a yummy mummy-to-be is a cape or poncho that drapes over the belly without drawing attention to it!
Another example of working with your ever growing belly instead of against it! Not only will this keep you warm in winter it is also super comfy because it loosely drapes over your body! Wear it over leggings and you are ready for a no fuss stylish look.

The other item I loved to wear during my winter pregnancy was my trusty Burberry scarf. Scarves can transform your boring outfit into a stylish one! Add a bit of colour to a grey or black dress with a print or bright scarf and you will have even Anna Wintour smiling!!! Also scarves are great at drawing attention away from your ever growing belly, perfect for days when you are feeling a bit self conscious about your changing body shape!! Which for me was nearly every day because I felt short and stumpy with a growing belly so by throwing on a nice scarf over my belly for some reason made me feel more glamorous!

I end with just one message, enjoy and have fun dressing your belly through winter there are so many possibilities for you to try! Keep stylish until next time all my yummy mummies☺️
