In My Bag

Having come back from a wonderful holiday spending time with family I got the chance to speak to my cousin who will become a father for the first time in the not so distant future! His beautiful expectant wife made me aware of how she has avoided packing her hospital bag simply because she had no idea what she would need. She gave me the inspiration for this post as I hope it would help others who are in the same boat as my cousins.

For some the task of packing your hospital bag can be a simple and seemingly smooth process. However, I realised for many others this can be a very daunting task, especially as in the case of my cousins where they are the first amongst their peers to be parents they do not have the luxury of drawing on the past experience of others. Hopefully this post will make that task a lot less daunting when the time comes and your bundle of joy is ready to join your beautiful family.

My rule of thumb when packing your bag is keep it simple, don’t go overboard with what you need to put in your bag. The main reason for this is that during child birth things can get quite chaotic from the trip to hospital to the actual labour itself so the less you pack the less you need to worry about looking after your bag. Remember you can always send your hubby or family members to pick up other items you may need during your hospital stay. After all thats what they are for right considering the traumatic experience that you have to endure during child birth thats the least hubby can do for you. So here is the list of what was in my bag during my hospital stay:

1. PYJAMAS

Peter Alexander PJs and Nightie (Can't get much more comfy then Mr Alexander)

I packed a pair of pyjamas and a long nightie in my bag. The nightie comes in handy for the first day after childbirth as you will have the doctor and nurses checking constantly down there to make sure everything is healing and looking good. Trust me once you give birth you lose all your shyness and reservations about your private parts it will be no holds bar so you just have to suck it up and let the nurses and doctors do their job. Hence, I found the nightie was a better option for easy access because it can be quite annoying having to constantly take your pyjama bottoms off. However, if you are like me who feels more comfy in their trusty pjs you can wear them after your first days in hospital, especially when your milk comes pjs are more easier to breastfeed in. I would also bring along a robe if you are having a baby during winter as it can get quite cold breast feeding in the middle of the night as I was for my first born.

2. SLIPPERS OR THONGS

Next Slippers These are great as you can wear them to go home and they are as comfy as slippers.

Slippers or Thongs are a must as hospital floors are quite cold and you may need to wander around from the nursery to different classes for breastfeeding and bathing baby.

3. TRACKSUIT

Juicy Couture Probably one of the most stylish brands of trackies

Its got to be said trackies are an optional item in your bag. I had a pair in mine because I really didn’t want to see my family and friends in pjs but still wanted to stay comfy and hey what better option than some comfy but also stylish trackies!!!

4. EVERYDAY BEAUTY PRODUCTS

As you can see I am a huge fan of Dermalogica, having introduced my hubby to the Dermalogica moisturiser a few years ago we have never looked back. He loves the fact that the moisturiser feels like you are not wearing any and I love that all their products are made from natural ingredients!! No nasty chemicals or artificial fragrances here!

5. BABY ROMPERS

Pure Baby

I have included my two favourite brands here but honestly there are so many endless possibilities when it comes to rompers and many other brands have wonderful designs and colours so we are indeed spoilt for choice in this area. I love Pure Baby as they use organic materials and hence their rompers are probably one of the softest I’ve seen. However, the down side is they are one of the more expensive brands. Thats why Bonds are the other of my favourite brands. Not only are Bonds affordable but their rompers are one of the few around that have cuffs sewn on to the sleeves of the rompers which are perfect to cover baby hands so no need for mittens that may keep falling off your newborns tiny hands.

When choosing rompers for your newborn look for ones with buttons rather than zippers. Go for rompers with covers on the feet and where possible hands as well. And my personal preference are rompers that are buttoned up down the middle so you can slip baby’s arms in on either side rather than rompers where you have to put it over baby’s head!! Remember newborns are quite fragile and they don’t like you taking long to dress them so the more convenient the romper the better!!

6. BEANIE AND CARDIGAN

As newborns are unable to regulate their body temperature at birth they can get quite cold especially during the evening so hence a cardigan and hat are essential to keep them warm.

7. BABY WRAP

I must stress baby wraps are an optional item as many hospitals do provide this during your stay in hospital. However, I chose to bring my own ones along being a fan of organic products I packed a couple of Aden and Adais muslin wraps. Yes the same one used for Prince George of Cambridge. Aden and Adais wraps are great they provide warmth to your newborn yet are made from light, soft and breathable material so baby is wrapped in the best of comfort!! And its all made from natural materials.

8. MISCELLANEOUS

Finally just a few bits and pieces to round out your bag and you are ready to go when the time comes and the baby is on its way!! You will need a brush, toothbrush, toothpaste, maternity pads (the thicker and longer the better) you will need it!! Finally some breast pads as there will be a few leakages when your milk comes. And that my folks was What Was In My Bag!!
